Everyone knows the original ‘Star Trek’ was nothing more than a western set in space, right? Well, not really. The original ‘Star Trek’ was a highly nuanced morality tale that just happened to be set in the world of science fiction, and as amazing as it may sound, it was also a deeply conservative work. Intrigued?

‘The Politics of Star Trek’ analyzes the political and philosophical messages contained within the original series of ‘Star Trek’. Volume one discusses ten episodes as well as providing an overall analysis of the show. In each episode, you will see any number of strongly conservative political positions taken by Captain James T. Kirk as he struggles to solve questions of morality and deal with the social issues of the day. What does being split into two halves say about human nature? Can aggression be met with weakness? Was ‘Star Trek’ pro-Vietnam War? And what about those smelly space hippies? Read on and see how week after week, ‘Star Trek’ delivered solidly conservative political messages.

The Politics of Star Trek eBook Andrew Price Todd R Maxwell

A real disappointment, one I didn't even finish. Each chapter is just a brief explanation of an episode, followed by a simplistic and monotonic statement that it supports conservative viewpoints. But the argument isn't backed by any citations, just unsupported declarations ("liberals want to appease Islamic terrorists...") that are required to position the episode as being conservative.

Painfully repetitive, just couldn't finish it.

The Politics of Star Trek eBook Andrew Price Todd R Maxwell Reviews

I bought this on a lark but was very pleasantly surprised. Halfway through it now--it's a quick read.
Basic conservative principles discussed concerning limited government, human nature, group/identity politics, etc. Arguments from classical liberalism (modern conservatism) vs modern progressivism/'liberalism' are well thought out and examples supporting each are cited from various TOS episodes. Similar to the political philosophy discussed in the book "Starship Troopers", sound arguments are based on human nature, hubris, history, and rational thought. There are no tortured, twisted attempts to make a 'sound' argument (a la Maddow/Olbermann/Morgan/etc) that the prog left has to use. (Flame on you TNG lightweights)

Pinko STTNG Picardites will not be happy--once again it shows how Kirkthink beats the stuffing out of Picardthought. (flame on again, you touchy feely Troi types)

Well written; not full of typos, spell check errors, and general poor proof reading/editing like many ebooks, that ruin the reading experience. It's only a dollar--well worth it, especially for a TOS fan. And if a TNG-er could deign to lower himself to read a TOS, you might learn something. Remember that hippie stuff about the mind and a parachute.

PS--Picard bites it.
Star Trek clearly did not support the Vietnam War or conservative ideals. I have heard this argument many times and the book like many others before it fails to make a case. This comes across as another conservative who somehow wants to make a non conservative message into what they want to hear. From the same people who tell us JFK was really a Republican.
The book tries to make an analysis of the politics hidden in the episodes, but the result is too biased towards conservative thinking, clearly showing the author's point of view. I do not recommend unless you are looking for confirmation of the conservative thinking ideas.
A well written, well thought out examination of one of the most influential television series of all time. If you have an open mind you can learn quite a bit. As much as I love Star Trek the childish liberalism has at times really turned me off. This book helped remember why the Original Series was so important to me growing up. I look forward to any future volumes.
I've actually made a lot of the observation the book makes. It was fun to find someone who wrote about observing the right wing slants of a lot of the Star Trek TOS stories.
Besides being entertaining, this book does something far more important it makes the reader THINK---agree or disagree. Just as the original Star Trek series gave television viewers something to think about, this book should do the same for those who enjoy a good read.
I bought this ebook mostly because it was cheap and I was looking for something to read on the subway to and from work. I'm a life-long Star Trek fan and have loved books like The Physics of Star Trek and others that combine genres. Plus, the little faceless guys on the cover were cute, and I thought they might make more of an appearance.

Unfortunately, I found this book to be pretty dull (which made it more tempting to play games on my phone than to try to expand my mind while riding the subway). Each section includes an overview of the plot of an episode and then a rather repetitive "Why it's Conservative" explanation for each. I didn't find the analyses to be particularly nuanced or contain a lot of information that makes you think...it's pretty much as straight-forward as it sounds. The combination of repetitive writing style and single-viewpoint analysis made me unable to finish the book. Thankfully, it was cheap.
